Aldus Manutius: The Struggle and the Dream
8 janvier 2015 — 22 février 2015, Proscholium
Curated by Dr Oren Margolis, History Faculty and Somerville College
Aldus Manutius (c. 1450-1515) is a towering figure in the history of the book. He and his partners established the Aldine Press in Venice and his legacy includes the italic type, a number of first editions, and his trademark pocket-sized octavo volumes of classical Greek and Latin texts. This display, to mark the 500th anniversary of his death, tells the story of Aldus’s remarkable career through books held in the Bodleian Library.
Opening times:
Monday to Friday 9am-5pm
Saturday 9am-4.30pm
Sunday 11am-5pm
This display is the centrepiece of a series of Aldine events in Oxford this winter. It also benefits from the work of student curatorial assistants whose own one-day display will be shown in the Proscholium on 6 February 2015.
View a selection of the exhibits in our Aldus Manutius: The Struggle and the Dream online exhibition.
